Las Vegas is one of the harshest environments on the planet for your car. With summer temperatures routinely hitting 110 degrees or higher, your cooling system is working overtime every single day you drive. The result? Overheating is one of the most common, and most expensive, problems we see at our shop.

The good news: most overheating issues are completely preventable. And if you catch the warning signs early, you can avoid the kind of engine damage that turns a $300 repair into a $3,000 one.

Why Does Your Car Overheat?

Your engine generates a massive amount of heat. The cooling system's job is to keep that heat in check by circulating coolant (antifreeze) through the engine and radiator. When any part of that system fails, heat builds up fast, and in Las Vegas, "fast" means very, very fast.

The most common causes of overheating include:

Warning Signs Your Engine Is Running Hot

Your car will usually tell you something is wrong before it becomes critical. Here's what to look for:

Important: If your temperature gauge reaches the red zone or you see steam coming from the hood, pull over immediately, turn off the engine, and do not open the radiator cap. Call us at 725-218-7944. Driving an overheating engine even a few miles can warp your cylinder head or crack the engine block.

What Happens If You Ignore Overheating?

This is where a small problem becomes a catastrophic one. When an engine runs too hot:

A blown head gasket repair runs $1,500 to $2,500. A warped head can add another $1,000. An engine replacement can hit $4,000 to $8,000 or more. The $150 coolant flush that could have prevented all of this starts looking pretty good at that point.

How to Prevent Overheating in the Las Vegas Climate

Prevention is simple if you stay on top of it:

  1. Check coolant levels monthly: Especially before summer. Your coolant reservoir has MIN and MAX lines. Keep it between them.
  2. Flush your coolant every 30,000 miles: Old coolant loses its ability to transfer heat and can corrode your cooling system from the inside out.
  3. Inspect hoses and belts annually: Las Vegas heat degrades rubber faster than most climates. A cracked hose is a disaster waiting to happen.
  4. Don't ignore your temperature gauge: It's there for a reason. Treat any reading above normal as an urgent warning.
  5. Service your radiator fan: If your A/C seems weak and your car gets hot at idle, the radiator fan may be failing.

What to Do If Your Car Starts Overheating Right Now

If you're on the road and the temperature starts climbing:

  1. Turn off the A/C immediately: it adds load to the engine
  2. Turn on the heater full blast, yes, really. It draws heat away from the engine
  3. Pull over safely and turn off the engine
  4. Do not open the hood for at least 15 minutes: steam and pressure need to dissipate
  5. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine: boiling coolant can cause severe burns
  6. Call for help or let the engine cool completely before checking fluid levels

Living in Las Vegas, we see overheating cases spike every summer starting in May. The best time to check your cooling system is right now, before the heat hits. A quick inspection at our shop takes about 20 minutes and could save you thousands.

At Ortiz Auto Solutions, we've been keeping Las Vegas vehicles running strong since 2009. If your car is running hot, or if you just want peace of mind before summer, bring it in. We'll inspect your entire cooling system, give you an honest assessment, and tell you exactly what it needs. Nothing more.

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
