Every summer, we see a spike in breakdowns, overheating calls, and emergency repairs at our shop. Most of them have one thing in common: they were completely preventable. A few hours of proactive maintenance in the spring can save you from a breakdown on the I-15 in 112-degree heat.
Here's the exact checklist our technicians use when preparing a vehicle for Las Vegas summer conditions. Walk through each item. Your car will thank you.
1. Coolant System: Your #1 Priority
In Las Vegas, your cooling system is working harder than it was ever designed to. This is not optional maintenance. It's survival.
- Check coolant level: Fill to the MAX line on the reservoir. Use the correct coolant type for your vehicle (check the owner's manual).
- Inspect coolant condition: Old coolant turns rusty or brown. If it looks dirty, it's time for a flush.
- Flush and refill if due: Most vehicles need a coolant flush every 30,000 miles or 2-3 years.
- Check all hoses and clamps: Squeeze the hoses. If they feel brittle, cracked, or mushy, replace them before they fail on you.
- Inspect the radiator: Look for corrosion, bent fins, or debris blocking airflow. A clogged radiator can't cool your engine.
2. Engine Oil: The Lifeblood of Your Engine
Heat breaks down engine oil faster. Running on old, degraded oil in a Las Vegas summer is one of the fastest ways to destroy your engine.
- Check oil level and condition: Pull the dipstick. Oil should be between MIN and MAX and appear amber to light brown, not black or gritty.
- Change oil if due: In extreme heat, err on the side of changing early. Fresh oil maintains its protective properties much better than old oil.
- Consider a synthetic upgrade: Full synthetic oil performs significantly better in high temperatures and lasts longer between changes.
3. Battery: Heat Kills Batteries Fast
Most people think cold weather kills car batteries. In Las Vegas, it's the summer that does the damage. Heat accelerates the chemical reaction inside the battery, causing fluid evaporation and internal corrosion. Many batteries that survived winter will fail their first summer.
- Test battery health: Any auto shop can load-test your battery in minutes. If it's below 12.4 volts at rest, it's on borrowed time.
- Check terminals: Clean any white or green corrosion from the terminals. Corrosion increases resistance and can cause a no-start.
- Replace if over 3-4 years old: In Las Vegas, batteries typically last 2-4 years vs. 4-6 years in milder climates. Don't gamble with an old battery in summer.
4. Tires: Heat + Asphalt = Blowout Risk
Hot asphalt and under-inflated tires are a dangerous combination. As temperature rises, so does tire pressure, and if your tire was already low, it can push past the safe threshold under heat and highway friction.
- Check tire pressure cold: Check in the morning before driving. Las Vegas daytime heat will give you a false reading. Correct PSI is on the door jamb sticker, not the tire sidewall.
- Inspect tread depth: Insert a quarter into the tread. If you can see the top of Washington's head, you need new tires.
- Look for sidewall cracks or bulges: Both are signs of structural failure waiting to happen. Replace immediately.
- Rotate if due: Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Even tread wear equals even wear life.
5. Air Conditioning: Not a Luxury in Las Vegas
Your A/C isn't a comfort feature in Las Vegas. It's a safety system. A failing A/C in 110-degree heat can lead to heat exhaustion for drivers, especially elderly passengers or children.
- Test A/C output: Should blow cold within 30 seconds of turning on. Warm output = low refrigerant or compressor issue.
- Check cabin air filter: A clogged filter reduces airflow and makes the A/C work harder. Replace every 12,000-15,000 miles.
- Have refrigerant levels checked: Low refrigerant is the most common A/C issue. A recharge is typically $100-$200 and makes a dramatic difference.
6. Belts and Hoses
Rubber degrades rapidly in extreme heat. A snapped serpentine belt can leave you stranded immediately and sometimes damages other components on the way out.
- Inspect serpentine belt: Look for fraying, cracking, or glazing. Most serpentine belts last 60,000-100,000 miles but fail earlier in hot climates.
- Check timing belt if applicable: Not all vehicles have one, but if yours does, follow the manufacturer's replacement interval closely. A broken timing belt is often a catastrophic engine failure.
- Inspect all hoses: Squeeze them. Soft/spongy = deteriorating from the inside. Hard/brittle = cracking from the outside. Either way, replace them.

How Long Does a Summer Prep Service Take?
If you bring your vehicle into Ortiz Auto Solutions for a summer prep inspection, we typically complete a full review in 45 minutes to an hour. We'll walk you through everything we find, give you a written estimate on anything that needs attention, and let you decide what to prioritize. No pressure, no scare tactics.
Pro tip: Schedule your summer prep service in April or early May, before the real heat arrives. Once temperatures hit 105 degrees, our schedule fills up fast with emergency repairs that could have been avoided. Get ahead of it now.
We've been helping Las Vegas drivers survive summer for over 15 years. Whether you need a full pre-summer inspection or just a quick coolant check, come see us at 4461 N Decatur Blvd #110. We're open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 7pm.
